How the English Immersion Environment Shapes Indonesian Metacognitive Learning Strategies: A Study in the English Village

Abstract:

Students learning English as a foreign or second language benefit from engaging in various immersion programs when feasible. This paper investigates how the English immersion environment of Indonesian’ gigantic English Village constructs the learners’ metacognitive learning strategies. It was an ethnographic qualitative study. Fourteen participants were selected purposively from six English institutions in the largest Indonesian English village of Kampung Inggris Pare. It employed participant observation and was followed by selective interviews. Kampung Inggris Pare encompassed around 160 English institutions. This English village’s context accommodates establishing an authentic environment, English camps, and exciting classroom activities. These three main elements were identified to assist the learners in centering, planning, arranging, monitoring, and evaluating their learning while studying and staying for some months in this English immersion environment. Thus, having good regulation and management in studying will lead them to gain the goal of mastering English quickly because their learning becomes more directed.
